Shiver

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Maggie Stiefvater. Oh, Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, Maggie. This girl...knows how to write! Her new young adult novel, Shiver, actually gave me the shivers. No lie. And that alone should be enough to convince everyone--in the whole wide world--to buy this book and read it NOW!

But, for those of you who need a little more convincing, well, I guess I can tell you a little more about this beautiful novel. Even though as soon as you finish reading this review, you will want to jump from your seat and run to the nearest bookstore to buy it. I promise. I kind of like to think of this as an in advanced I told you there was no way you could pass this book up kind of review.

When Grace was young, she got attacked by a wolf (of the Were variety). She only survived because a yellow-eyed wolf stepped in to protect her. This savage attack, which left her ripped and broken doesn't scare her, though (seriously, these YA characters are fearless. I know, personally, if I was attacked or found out one of my friends was a werewolf I would be out of there! And fast! Now you see me. Now you don't). From then on she feels somewhat of a connection--or love, even-- for the wolves, especially the yellow eyed one that comes around every winter.

Years later, another attack on one of Grace's fellow high school students, sets a literal wolf hunt in motion. And because of this very reason, Sam--otherwise known as the yellow eyed wolf-- meets Grace for the very first time. I have to say, among the masses of wolf books out there, the twist Ms. Siefvater put on her wolves was very creative. Through this unique twist, we get to encounter Sam and Grace's budding, beautiful, and kiss-tastic relationship. However, nothing good lasts forever, and this proves true with their story, too. Think of it kind of like a ticking time bomb (Sam being the bomb...yikes!).

Shiver is the story of Grace and Sam. When reading, I swear you can feel their pain, joy, and excitement. Their story is so real, heartwarming, and even funny, at times. And, as if that wasn't enough, there is lots and lots of kissing. I mean KISSING, girls! Isn't that what we're all looking for, anyway???

Seeing as I could probably go on forever about everything I love in this book, I won't. You'll just have to read it. I will tell you, though, that when I read the last page...my heart pounded, and I actually stopped breathing for a second. Yes, it's that good. And no, for once, I'm not over exaggerating.

The second book, Linger, comes out in July 2010, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I really mean it! I can't wait! (Does anyone know how to get a hold of ARCs??? I really need to know what happens next!)

Okay! Now, time is up! We've wasted too much precious reading (and hot boy kissing) time. Everyone must go pick up their copy of Shiver now! Enjoy!

PS - The formatting on this post is very screwed up! I tried to fix it, but blogger wasn't having it. Sorry. : (

  1. The sole reason I want to read this book (well, before reading your review): Its GORGEOUS cover. I hope when I'm published I get a cover that beautiful. I would frame it and hang it on the wall. (Oh wait, I'll probably do that no matter what...)
