Teaser Tuesday

Here's a little teaser from my current WIP, which is, at this very second, still named Static.

(FYI - the formatting is a little messed up. Please excuse Bloggers technical difficulties!)

A budding fear of seeing Caleb grew stronger as the day progressed, and each time I stepped into or walked down the crowded corridors my heart raced and stomach churned with anticipation. Luck had sided with me so far, but it wouldn’t hold out forever. Eventually I would run into him, or see him strolling down the hall, laughing with his friends—probably at me for believing we would ever last. And as each tick of the second hand catapulted us forward, the inescapable reality of lunch drew closer. I mentally prepared myself for seeing him at the table we once shared.

It’s funny how one year can change everything. Last year I looked forward to junior and senior lunch being together. Now the idea of lunch and of eating left a stinging bubble of acid caught in my throat that burned whenever I tried to swallow.

The bell rang indicating the end of class and, at the same time, signaling the beginning of hell. It was lunchtime.

Reluctantly, I stepped into the hall. Amethyst was supposed to wait for me by the outside entrance of the cafeteria, but she wasn’t there when I arrived. My stomach grew uneasy standing there, waiting for her, in one of the major arteries of the school. After a few minutes, I gave up. It was time to pull up my big girl pants and face my fears. I would see him eventually. I knew this.

I whispered to myself, “You can do this.”

Blowing out a puff of hot air, I turned and stomped into the cafeteria, confident. He was not the reason for my existence, and I would not let what he did define me.

Just as those last words passed through my mind, I spotted him at our table and then something hit me with such a force that my world faded to black.

  10. I like this girl! She's honest. The bell at the end of class does sometimes signal the beginning of hell, and we all have to pull up our big girl pants at one time or another. Thanks for this excellent post.

  21. Oh, very nice!! The poor thing. That Caleb sounds like a big fat meany for breaking her heart. Oh gosh, you hit it on the nose, though, with the big worry of running into him and seeing him at "their" lunch table. It's exactly the sort of thing I would have thought of at that age.

And yes, you are a tease!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Carolina - Thanks! And he is a big fat meany... maybe? I'm not sure yet. LOL.

Poor Em, though. Caleb really is the least of her worries. She just doesn't know it yet.

You're much too sweet! Thanks for all the wonderful comments. : D
